The Mount Lorette picnic area is located 1 hour west of Calgary (30 minutes from Canmore, Alberta). This well-manicured picnic area is located beside Highway 40 in the Kananaskis River Valley. This is excellent place for a picnic when on a .

The emerald green ponds are feed from the crystal-clear Kananaskis River and are stocked with rainbow trout.

This is a perfect family-friendly area where you can barbeque, stroll the paved trail around the ponds and even learn to fish. If you're looking for a strenuous but scenic day , consider the Carnarvon Lake hike.

Tucked away in the forest are individual picnic spots that have their own tables and fire-pits (bring your own firewood). Spots are available on a first-come basis, but we've always got a spot, even in the height of summer.

Climbing Mount Lorette

For the more adventurous people, is an option. Scaling this peak is actually quite technical near the top and should only be attempted by intermediate and advanced climbers.





Mount Lorette is a front-range peak in that can be scaled in a few hours. On sunny summer days, you'll get fantastic views of the Kananaskis River Valley as well as the prairie views stretching of Calgary.

Getting to Mount Lorette in Kananaskis Park

The Mount Lorette parking area is located 15 minutes south of the Trans Canada Highway. From Calgary head west (from Banff & Canmore head east) on Highway 1 then turn south at the Highway 40 Kananaskis junction.

The Mount Lorette turnoff is located on the left-hand side of the road. You've gone too far if you reach the turn to the Kananaskis Village/.

The Mount Lorette picnic area is a perfect place to retreat to when life gets too hectic in the city. Pack a lunch, grab some firewood & your fishing rod and escape into the Kananaskis Park. This secret area is a real treasure... and well hidden for when you 'call in sick'(cough, cough) for the day.
