Kananaskis Park in Alberta - A Picnic & a Hike at Mount Lorette
Picnic in Kananaskis Park
The Mount Lorette picnic area is located 1 hour west of Calgary (30 minutes from Canmore, Alberta). This well-manicured picnic area is located beside Highway 40 in the Kananaskis River Valley. This is excellent place for a picnic when on a day trip from Calgary.
The emerald green ponds are feed from the crystal-clear Kananaskis River and are stocked with rainbow trout.
This is a perfect family-friendly area where you can barbeque, stroll the paved trail around the ponds and even learn to fish. If you're looking for a strenuous but scenic day hike in Kananaskis, consider the Carnarvon Lake hike.
Tucked away in the forest are individual picnic spots that have their own tables and fire-pits (bring your own firewood). Spots are available on a first-come basis, but we've always got a spot, even in the height of summer.
Climbing Mount Lorette
For the more adventurous people, climbing Mount Lorette is an option. Scaling this peak is actually quite technical near the top and should only be attempted by intermediate and advanced climbers.
Mount Lorette is a front-range peak in Kananaskis Park that can be scaled in a few hours. On sunny summer days, you'll get fantastic views of the Kananaskis River Valley as well as the prairie views stretching of Calgary.
- Hikers should be cautious when attempting to climb Mount Lorette. Deaths have occurred.
- Hiking with dogs at Mount Lorette is allowed but must be leashed at all times.
- Hiking in Kananaskis is uncrowded and beautiful. Remember that you're in bear country!

- The ponds are stocked with trout and the shallow water makes this a perfect place to teach little-ones how to fish. For bigger and better results, fishing in Alberta doesn't get better than Upper Kananaskis Lake, 20 minutes away.
