Hiking Vancouver Island - The Galloping Goose Rail Trail near Sooke, BC
Sooke, BC is located 20 minutes outside of Victoria in a rural setting where the rainforest meets the sea. When the sky is just right, the sunsets are spectacular and brilliant. This photo was taken while we were hiking Vancouver Island along on the Galloping Goose Trail, one of the most scenic rail trails in Canada.
The Galloping Goose Trail is a gentle 55 kilometer pathway from downtown Victoria to the mountains behind Sooke. In this section, near Roche Cove in East Sooke BC, the rail trail winds next to the rugged shoreline of the Sooke Basin.
In the photo, looking to the right is the mouth of the Sooke Harbour that leads to the Pacific Ocean.
Even though the area is sheltered, the cool ocean breeze picks up around sunset. Bring a sweater or cuddle close on a seaside bench to keep warm.
The trail is easy and well groomed. The tracks have been removed and a spectacular corridor remains, sheltered by the forest canopy.
If you're looking for a more challenging day hike, consider the Coast Trail in East Sooke Park. The trail head is 10 minutes from here.
